If you want to get into a festive mood this holiday season then you should visit Tallahassee, Florida’s capital city, which provides a unique festive ambiance. Tallahassee hosts a number of events and festivals throughout the year. Apart from hosting events this town has a great historical relevance. In 1539, Hernando DeSoto, the Spanish explorer celebrated the first Christmas mass in Tallahassee.
Must Do Things in Tallahassee
Visit the Florida State University
Westcott Building, FSU: We had heard a lot about this top notch university, so it was at the top of the itinerary. My wife and I were truly impressed by the beautiful and huge college campus which spans over 489 acres of land. The Westcott building was amazing and it houses the Ruby Diamond Auditorium, famous for its unique appearance. And the football team isn’t too bad, either.
Go to Tallahassee Museum of History and Natural Science
We had a great fun at this place and it’s a must visit if you are on a trip with your family. It was good to see the animals in their natural surroundings .If you like outdoor sports then go in for the zip line course which promise good adventure.
Checkout the Lounge at Hotel Duval
You can get a glimpse of the burgeoning night life of Tallahassee at Level 8 of this lounge. The cocktails served at the place are awesome.
Enjoy a walk in the Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park
We enjoyed a peaceful and romantic walk around the lake to Maclay house. The gardens are beautiful and picturesque. The reflecting pool is another highlight of this place and adds to the beauty. You can also go in for trekking as the place has awesome trails. The giant trees, the colorful flowers and the serenity provided an overwhelming experience right in the middle of the city.
Go in for a bike ride at Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail
We enjoyed a bike ride at this trail following the oldest railroad line of Florida. This place does not have much traffic so provides you an opportunity for a wonderful ride in the shade, provided by the hanging trees. It is one of the smoothest trails that I have ever seen and is great for walking, bicycling and skating.
Where to Stay
Tallahassee provides a variety of options for stay. We stayed at a family owned lodge which was very reasonable and also provided good facilities. The hospitality was amazing and we also heard some interesting folklores from our hosts, who have been staying at this place for many years. Apart from this, Tallahassee has some nice hotels and Southern style inns.
Tips for Tourists
- Prefer to take a taxi for sight seeing as the public transportation is not that great.
- Prefer staying in family owned lodges which are not only economical but also give you an insight into the culture of this place.
- If you want to taste some good beer then head to the Fermentation Lounge, which gives some tasty options.
